Captions

Captions are written versions of spoken words and other important audio that are synced with a video.

Why do we need captions?

Captioning benefits many users because it makes content searchable and can support learning for non-Native English speakers, visual learners, and users in noisy environments. Videos and live audio must have captions and a transcript. A transcript is sufficient forarchived audio.

Captioning Best Practices

Captions should be synchronized, equivalent, and accessible.

  • Synchronized: Text appears at the same time as the audio.
  • Equivalent: Caption content should be equivalent to that of spoken word.
  • Accessible: Caption content should be readily accessible and available to those who need it.
